Divorce laws 'must be updated'
Divorce laws in the UK must be updated to reflect changes in society, it has been claimed.
Writing in the Birmingham Post, legal expert Elizabeth Howe said that the statutory framework for such legal separations has not changed since the late 1960s and early 1970s, when women were subject to fewer job opportunities and pay rates were less equal.
She pointed out that employment opportunities for female workers are now considerably more abundant and there are benefits to encourage them back into work when their children have reached a sufficient age.
Ms Howe commented: "The law needs to be reviewed in order that it reflects life in the 21st Century, which represents greater equality for women."
Earlier this year, Unbiased.co.uk found that 48 per cent of lawyers polled had seen an increase in the proportion of UK couples delaying reaching settlements in the divorce process until the end of the recession.
