Divorce rate 'to fall during recession'

Ylr-news-19163334

The number of people seeking divorces is likely to fall during the current economic downturn, the results of a survey have suggested.

Conducted by Grant Thornton, the research discovered that nearly half (48 per cent) of matrimonial lawyers recently polled predicted a decrease in the number of people filing for divorce in England and Wales.

Meanwhile, 23 per cent reported a belief that the number will stay the same.

According to Robert Kerr of Grant Thornton's forensic and investigation services practice, the impact of the economic climate on couple's wealth may be a factor behind a possible decline in divorces.

He said: "The reasons for this vary, but certainly the financial carve-up that follows a divorce settlement will be at the forefront of a couple's mind when contemplating divorce."

With offices in 30 locations around the UK, Grant Thornton claims to have more than 25,000 individual and 15,000 corporate clients.
