Divorce risk 'elevated due to economic problems'
Posted by Emily Jones
The economic problems that continue to affect the UK and its citizens may be serving to increase the risk of couples getting divorced.
This is according to a study conducted by Clydesdale and Yorkshire Banks, which found that the financial difficulties caused by the recession are having a disruptive impact on the relationships between family members.
It was suggested that over one million households are arguing more due to such concerns.
Meanwhile, the banks - which were both founded in the 19th century - also noted that nearly two million homes reported being under severe strain on a daily basis as a result of budgeting issues.
Responding to the findings, Professor Kevin Durkin of the University of Strathclyde's Department of Psychology commented: "Economic stress has substantial effects on families. It impacts on the parents, causing irritability, marital discord and depression."
Steve Reid, retail director at Clydesdale and Yorkshire Banks, added that there is "no question" that financial worries can cause problems among relatives.
