A driver has successfully had a parking ticket issued to him by his local authority overturned after he challenged the decision.

According to the Daily Gazette, Kit Thompson, a 59-year-old from Colchester, was issued with a ticket after he left his vehicle in a spot overnight while unaware that it had yellow crosshatch markings indicating that parking was not allowed there.

Mr Thompson claimed that it was too dark for him to have seen that parking was prohibited and, despite the fact that Colchester Council initially disagreed, the case has since been resolved with the ticket being rescinded.

He told the news source that the authority accepted that "it was probably too dark to see the markings clearly, and they now admit the yellow lines were badly worn".

Elsewhere, The Argus newspaper has reported that, on average, there is a parking ticket issued in Brighton and Hove every five minutes.
