A considerable number of motorists in the UK are risking having to make insurance claims because they are not taking basic security measures.

This is according to research conducted by Admiral, which found that 73 per cent of drivers polled had left personal items on display in an unattended car. This was a rise on the 71 per cent recorded last year.

The firm - which specialises in providing cover for younger drivers, people living in cities and those driving performance cars - stated that possessions which are commonly left in view include coats and jackets, CDs, handbags and MP3 players.

Responding to the findings, Admiral managing director Sue Longthorn said: "At this time of year, people will often leave their Christmas shopping on show on the back seat of their car. For a criminal this is an open invitation."

She went on to say that people should consider how "heartbroken" they would be if they had gifts they had purchased taken from their vehicles.
