Motorists should take several steps to make sure their vehicle is safe as the UK moves into its period of colder weather, an expert has said.

According to Simon Elstow, head of training at the Institute of Advanced Motorists' (IAM) Drive & Survive scheme, it is important for drivers to properly prepare their car for autumn.

Mr Elstow explained that conditions on roads across the country will begin to change in the near future, meaning drivers need to be fully prepared to ensure they avoid any preventable accidents.

For instance, the IAM official urged people to drop their speed as they approach patches of wet leaves, as these "can be as dangerous as hitting standing water".

Meanwhile, checking that a car's wiper blades and battery are in good condition is also advisable, Mr Elstow added.

This comes after Robert Gifford of the Parliamentary Advisory Council for Transport Safety insisted there are affordable car insurance policies on the market despite the effects of the recession. ADNFCR-2353-ID-800738323-ADNFCR
