The amount of money made by workers rose last year, new figures reveal.

According to the Annual Survey of Hours and Earnings from the Office for National Statistics (ONS), in April 2009, median gross weekly earnings were £489 for full-time employees on adult rates whose pay was not affected by absence.

This was up by two per cent on the £479 registered 12 months previously.

Meanwhile, stronger growth in women's hourly earnings compared with men's meant that the gender pay gap fell to 12.2 per cent from 12.6 per cent.

However, responding to the findings, co-founder of everywoman Karen Gill said more needs to be achieved to equalise the remuneration levels of men and women.

She commented: "Although there has been a slight move towards improving this gap, in real terms this is negligible and there's still a way to go."

This is a "key part" of the everywoman manifesto, she added.
