Elderly people can take several simple steps to reduce the likelihood of them suffering an accident at home, an expert has said.

According to Vicky Johnston, a specialist physiotherapist in falls prevention at the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy, there are numerous measures such people can implement to cut the risk of them falling and hurting themselves within their properties.

Ms Johnston noted it is important for senior citizens to "avoid clutter and clear up any spills as they happen" as well as to "fix down and remove any loose rugs, carpets or trailing wires".

In addition, the specialist stated it is vital for all areas of the home to have good lighting, particularly halls and stairways.

Research published earlier this week (May 17th) by the Royal College of Physicians showed that elderly patients face regional variations in the quality of NHS services for the care and prevention of falls and fractures.
