Electric vehicle buyers 'will benefit from govt announcements'
Posted by Mark Cunningham
Business owners keen to buy electric cars may welcome a government announcement that it is to make such vehicles exempt from company car tax for five years.
In his Pre-Budget Report, chancellor Alistair Darling announced the move, which will complement measures revealed earlier this year under which tax breaks of between £2,000 and £5,000 will be introduced for private buyers.
Jeremy Townsend, a UK spokesman for Renault, said: "This announcement will go towards assisting the infrastructure we need to make electric vehicles a viable solution in the UK," the Financial Times reports.
Meanwhile, Paul Everitt, chief executive of the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, added that the development will make business buyers considerably more interested in electric cars and vans.
In his speech last Wednesday (December 9th), Mr Darling announced a range of measures designed to enhance the UK's green credentials, as well as to boost the country's flagging economy.
