Employees 'should stand up against unpaid overtime'
Posted by Emily Jones
Workers in the UK should stand up for their rights and make sure they do not get pressured into doing unpaid overtime.
This is according to director of the Institute of Employment Rights Carolyn Jones, who said that staff should resist the "intensification of work expectations" that has ensued since the onset of the recession.
Her comments were made in the wake of new research from the Trades Union Congress, which found that a rising number of employees are working "extreme" amounts of overtime.
The organisation revealed that the number of people clocking up an average of two extra hours of unpaid work a day rose by 19,000 last year to reach 900,000 in total.
Ms Jones remarked: "The problem is that employers are wanting to squeeze more and more out of fewer and fewer workers and many are using the recession to claim they can't afford to pay overtime."
