Employers' hiring intentions 'being stifled by weak recovery'

Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are being forced to curb their desire to add to their ranks of full-time staff due to various financial concerns.

That is according to a spokeswoman from the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB), who believes that economic worries both on an individual and national scale are causing managers to re-assess their plans for expansion in the near future.

This may also dictate whether or not companies will be in a position to offer pay rises to their existing employees in the coming months and the FSB official indicated that while bosses are willing to do so, they need to be provided with more "incentives".

Research published recently by Manpower showed that SMEs are planning to increase their headcount by an average of eight per cent in the third quarter of 2011.

However, the expert concluded that issues such as "cash-flow and access to finance" are preventing them from carrying out this wish.
