Employers 'should prevent weight-based bullying at work'
Posted by Mark Cunningham
Employees should not have to suffer bullying at work as a result of their weight.
This is according to Steve Williams, head of equality services at Acas, who said that people in senior roles should have training to enable them to stop this behaviour occurring.
His comments follow the release of research conducted by YouGov on behalf of Slimming World, which revealed that one in three obese workers feel like 'second-class citizens' in their offices.
It was also found that one in four such people claim to have suffered negative comments about their weight while at work.
Mr Williams remarked: "If a colleague is being bullied in the workplace over their weight then an employer has a duty of care to deal with this and not ignore the situation."
He added that businesses should invest in keeping supervisors' knowledge and people management skills up-to-date so they can tackle unfair treatment against staff members.
