Employment law breaches uncovered by investigation
Breaches of UK employment laws were recently uncovered by an investigation conducted by a local newspaper.
Staff from the Enfield Advertiser posed as a window cleaning business and contacted a number of recruitment agencies, claiming they wanted to hire temporary workers.
They specified that they did not want any candidates over the age of 40 or any ethnic minorities.
In total, 64 per cent of the companies contacted were prepared to transgress anti-discrimination legislation and seek workers who fulfilled these criteria.
Issuing a response to the findings, the Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC) stated that those involved in recruitment need to ensure they do not succumb to pressure to breach employment laws.
The organisation's director of external relations Tom Hadley, said: "It is in the interests of the recruitment industry that we rise above this by remaining scrupulous and doing the right thing."
A body for those involved in the private recruitment and staffing industry, the REC claims to represent 8,000 corporate members and 6,000 individual members.
