Individuals feeling under financial pressure in the wake of the global economic downturn should get active.

That is the advice of Kim Stephenson, founder of online resource Taming the Pound, who believes that physical exercise is a key factor behind being able to cope with the strain of debt.

Recent research published in the Journal of Studies on Alcohol and Drugs established that many adults might turn to alcohol or cigarettes as a way of coping when they are facing monetary difficulties.

However, Mr Stephenson believes there are healthier ways for people to handle their emotions while in this situation.

For instance, the expert advised making a budget, as this sets out clearly what someone is able to spend without borrowing more.

And, on top of this practical step, he recommended focusing on hobbies such as sports, walking or gardening, as they can be "good stress reducers" and are "linked to happiness and better health". ADNFCR-2353-ID-801212978-ADNFCR
