Expert: More Britons opting to take staycations
Posted by Emily Swanson
A growing number of Britons are deciding to take staycations as opposed to heading overseas for their holidays, an expert in the travel industry has said.
According to Sarah Long, spokeswoman for the English tourism board VisitEngland, the effects of the global economic downturn have caused many people to reassess where they can afford to take a break.
Ms Long explained there has "certainly been an increase" in the number of individuals remaining on these shores for their holidays since 2009 and this is a "direct result" of the credit crunch.
She went on to note that this period gave Britons who would not have decided to stay in the country previously an "opportunity to rediscover a destination on their doorstep".
"Over half the population plan to take more breaks at home than they did in the past," the official added.
Recently, Amanda Lamb of MasterCard Prepaid urged individuals to prepare for unexpected costs when on holiday.
