Expert predicts tough year for employment sector

The majority of Britons are likely to face a tough year in terms of pay awards and redundancies in 2011.

This is the view of Phil Flaxton, chief executive officer of Work Wise UK, who noted the majority of professional fields are likely to see unemployment levels remain at around the same level in the coming months.

However, Mr Flaxton did state that "some sectors are doing better than others", meaning that certain workers may benefit from greater security in their jobs as opposed to feeling the pressure of cuts.

He went on to indicate that flexibility will remain vital for all employers in these uncertain financial times, as smaller businesses in particular will have to be "very careful" about their level of staffing.

This comes after research published by XPertHR showed recently that private sector employees should not expect significant salary increases in 2011, as pay awards will be "modest at best".
