Figures show falling house prices

Britons thinking about purchasing a house in the near future may benefit from lower prices in the sector, new research has shown.
According to data published recently by the Land Registry, the average cost of a home in England and Wales slipped by 1.7 per cent in February 2011 in comparison to the figure recorded in the corresponding month last year.
The current average price of £162,215 also represents a dip of 0.8 per cent against January, which could be indicative of the fact that the residential property sector is continuing to struggle in the aftermath of the global economic downturn.
Furthermore, the north east of England experienced the largest decrease in both annual and monthly terms, as in houses there are now worth 7.1 per cent less than they were 12 months ago and four per cent less than in January.
Meanwhile, James Davis of Upad commented recently that more people are now opting to rent a home as opposed to buying.
