An accident at work that resulted in the death of two fish farm employees has led to a pair of companies being issued with a significant fine.

Logan Inglis and Scottish Sea Farms have been penalised to the tune of £640,000 for an incident at a salmon plant on Loch Creran north of the border in which Campbell Files and a colleague passed away.

At the time of this accident, Mr Files and Arthur Raikes were mending a hydraulic crane on a barge and went below deck to find the necessary equipment to complete this task.

However, oxygen levels were dangerously low in this area of the vessel, which caused Mr Files and a co-worker to pass out and never recover.

Barry Barker, principal inspector at the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), commented: "The deaths in this case should have been avoided - the risks should have been identified and a clear and safe system of work prepared."

Recently, the HSE revealed that the number of agricultural workers who died in industrial incidents dipped to 34 in 2010-11 from 39 one year previously.
