Florida has much more to offer to holidaymakers than just theme parks and shopping malls, an expert has insisted.

Traditionally, the sorts of things that first spring to mind when thinking of the Sunshine State are Disneyworld, discount retail outlets and beaches.

However, in the view of Jo Eckersley, UK public relations officer for the Central Florida Visitors & Convention Bureau, the American peninsula also represents an ideal getaway destination for families wanting to sample the great outdoors.

Ms Eckersley insisted the state offers a "thrilling" range of tourism opportunities, making it a perfect place to enjoy all types of vacations.

For instance, she noted that Florida is something of a giant equivalent of the Lake District in Britain - as it has "554 natural freshwater lakes occupying about 135 square miles" - but with the added bonus of having a "a great sunny climate".

Indeed, the Polk Naturefest 2011 takes place in Polk County next week (October 6th-9th), which offers an array of activities and events to showcase the area's scenery. ADNFCR-2353-ID-800741159-ADNFCR
