Gay couple win compensation on grounds of discrimination

A gay couple have been awarded a combined compensation settlement of £3,600 after filing a grievance case against the owners of a bed and breakfast hotel on the grounds of sexual orientation discrimination.

In a judgment heard at Bristol Crown Court, civil partners Martyn Hall and Steve Preddy were awarded £1,800 each after an incident in which Peter and Hazel Bull, proprietors of the Chymoryah Private Hotel in Cornwall, refused to allow the couple to stay in a double room together.

As a result, Mr Hall and Mr Preddy sued the owners - who are devout Christians - because they felt they were being discriminated against on the basis of their sexuality.

Mr and Mrs Bull denied this by claiming their policy applied equally to heterosexual couples as they do not believe in sex before marriage.

However, Judge Rutherford ruled that the hotel had directly discriminated against the couple on the grounds of their sexual orientation and opted to award them damages following a case funded by the Equality and Human Rights Commission.
