Gender equality among workers in Britain will not be achieved for some time, a new report has claimed.

Produced by Friends Provident, Visions of Britain 2020 revealed that attitudes among employees may prevent major change taking place.

If found that nearly a quarter (23 per cent) of women polled would rather work less and be paid less, compared with only 17 per cent of men.

In addition, the firm - which has a history tracing back for over 170 years - discovered that a third of people polled did not believe that wage equality would be achieved within the next decade.

Indeed, many believed it would take considerably longer than this before parity is reached in the UK.

HR director for Friends Provident Gillian Fox remarked: "The report demonstrates an emerging difference between men and women's priorities in the workplace, which could impact the likelihood of reaching gender equality in the future."
