Good garages 'should warn motorists about worn tyres in advance'
Good vehicle repair centres should warn drivers about worn tyres in advance, it has been claimed.
According to Tim Shallcross, head of technical policy and advice at the Institute of Advanced Motorists, while this is good practice, not many such centres do it.
He commented: "A good garage should be saying, 'you don't need your tyres changing now, you don't need your brakes changing now, but sometime before you bring it back in for the next service keep an eye on them, I reckon you will need them'."
Mr Shallcross' comments coincide with TyreSafe's tyre safety month.
The expert also suggested that it is "very easy" for people's cars to reach illegal tread depth without them realising.
This is one reason why many cars fail their MOTs, he added, with even those who check their tyre pressures "assiduously" often overlooking depth of tread.
Currently, 1.6 millimetres is the legal minimum tread depth for car tyres in the UK.
