Government agrees to wage rise for low paid public sector workers

Many lower paid workers in the country's public sector are set to benefit from an increase in their annual salary, it has emerged.
The government has revealed that it has accepted proposals from the Pay Review Bodies that will see professionals such as prison wardens, teachers and those in the armed forces who currently earn £21,000 or less every year have their pay increased by £250 in 2011-12.
In order to provide this wage rise, the Conservative-Liberal Democrat alliance has announced it will implement a freeze on the pay of those taking home more than the threshold figure of £21,000 for the next two years, thus saving more than £3 billion annually.
Chief secretary to the Treasury Danny Alexander noted that some "tough decisions" had to be made with regard to these freezes, but added that this had enabled the government to "provide a fair increase for the low paid".
This comes after XpertHR recently published a study showing that median basic pay awards in the UK have increased in the last year.
