A government report has highlighted the need for more action to be taken over the effect that fraudulent car insurance claims are having on the industry as a whole.

The Cost of Motor Insurance consultation document, which was published recently by the Transport Committee, outlines the Conservative-Liberal Democrat alliance's belief that the authorities need to work alongside providers and other companies involved in the sector in order to tackle this growing problem.

Louise Ellman, chair of the Transport Committee, commented that "staged accidents" intended to result in personal injury payouts are "on the increase" and added "we have been lucky there have been no fatalities from such incidents".

Therefore, the study concluded that a specialist police unit - which would be funded by insurance firms - may need to be set up to reverse this trend.

Such plans have received the backing of Graeme Trudgill, head of corporate affairs at the British Insurance Brokers' Association, who said that it his organisation is "committed" to these changes.
