Government scraps parking legislation

Motorists across the UK might be relieved to hear that the government has scrapped measures put into place in 2001 that it believes discriminated against those with cars.

Under plans announced yesterday (January 4th 2011) by local government secretary Eric Pickles and transport secretary Philip Hammond, the Conservative-Liberal Democrat alliance will abolish national parking restrictions that both encourage councils to charge high parking costs and limit the amount of spaces available for cars.

The previous administration felt these guidelines would encourage people to take alternative modes of transport instead of using their own vehicles, but the coalition stated that they actually "unfairly penalised drivers" and led to "over-zealous parking enforcement".

Mr Pickles, who is also MP for Brentwood & Ongar, noted: "From now on communities have the freedom to set competitive local charges that bring shoppers to the high street, proportionate enforcement and the right number of spaces for new development."
