Government urged to amend NHS proposals
Posted by Patrick White
David Cameron and other senior government officials need to make several amendments to their planned reforms of the NHS if the changes are to be successful.
That is according to Dr Hamish Meldrum, council chairman at the British Medical Association, who feels, at present, the proposed alterations would result in a "more fragmented health service" as well as putting many hospitals "at risk of closure".
The prime minister yesterday (May 16th) gave a speech to NHS staff at the Ealing Hospital in London, in which he insisted that reforms to make the system "more efficient and more effective" are crucial to "save" the NHS in the wake of the worldwide monetary slump.
Dr Meldrum agrees with the sentiment behind this idea, as he feels a structure of "greater integration" is required, with more "emphasis on prevention".
However, he added that "the health bill as it is currently written would make these improvements far harder to achieve".
