Government urged to avoid repeat of bank holiday confusion

The government must take action now to make sure there is no repeat of the current confusion over the entitlement of employees to take April 29th off on the Queen's diamond jubilee weekend in 2012.

That is the view of Brendan Barber, general secretary of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), who has spoken of his unease about the fact that many companies appear set to ignore the fact that David Cameron has declared April 29th 2011 - the day on which Prince William and Kate Middleton will tie the knot - a public holiday.

Mr Barber noted that this is the "right thing" for unsure bosses to do, but also called on the Conservative-Liberal Democrat alliance to outline clear rules and regulations to avoid any similar situation next year.

The official from the TUC - which represents more than six million workers - added that the administration can ensure this happens by raising the "minimum standard for paid holidays".
