Government urged to increase regulation of will writers
Posted by Helen Jones
The government must implement an enhanced system of regulation on the UK's will writing market, an organisation has stated.
According to the Law Society - a representative body for solicitors operating in England and Wales - people working as will writers must be regulated "at the earliest opportunity" in order to curb the number of instances whereby individuals are being exploited by unqualified people.
Therefore, the body has introduced a new campaign targeted at raising awareness among consumers to help them avoid will writers who have not obtained the necessary training to draft "one of the most important financial and personal" documents of a person's lifetime.
Linda Lee, president of the Law Society, commented that because no formal qualifications are technically required, "anyone in England and Wales can operate as a will writer".
"When something does go wrong, there's no system in place to prevent the same mistakes happening again," the expert added.
