Govt helpline 'will help workers understand their rights'

Ylr-news-19372620

A new helpline run by the government will help workers to understand their rights, it has been claimed.

The Pay and Work Rights Helpline provides information on such issues at the National Minimum Wage, the Agricultural Minimum Wage and people's rights not to have to work for more than 48 hours a week against their will.

It also enables employees to access advice about their rights if they are employed by an agency or gangmaster.

The Trades Union Congress has welcomed the development, claiming that it was one of the key recommendations in its Commission on Vulnerable Employment final report last year.

General secretary of the organisation Brendan Barber said: "[The helpline] will ensure workers at risk of mistreatment by their employers not only have a phone number that they can call to find out about their rights ... but they can also ask for help in enforcing these rights."
