Govt 'needs to clarify benefits of buying electric cars'

The government needs to encourage consumers to purchase electric cars, it has been claimed.

According to Paul Everett, chief executive of the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, such vehicles will not become widely popular for some time yet.

He made his remarks after Nissan announced that the retail price for the first zero emission electric car designed for the mass market, called the LEAF, will be £23,350.

The expert said: "At a governmental level there needs to be a staple set of incentives, through tax methods and elsewhere, as well as a commitment to broadening and improving the infrastructure required."

At present, hybrid and electric cars are seen as too expensive, he suggested.

Mr Everett also predicted that improved petrol and diesel engines will be the staple of the market for the next two decades, while more eco-friendly versions will form a significant but still niche part of the sector.
