The NHS will not be improved under reform plans outlined by the government recently, an expert in the healthcare field has said.

Recently, prime minister David Cameron unveiled proposals that he believes are crucial to "save" the UK's healthcare system in the aftermath of the global economic downturn, including making savings of some £20 billion from the organisation over the coming years.

However, in a formal submission to the NHS Future Forum, the British Medical Association (BMA) has urged the administration to rethink these plans prior to implementing them into law.

The body noted there are "very high levels of concern" among professionals in the industry about the proposed alterations and Dr Hamish Meldrum, council chairman at the BMA, said it is vital for the coalition to either "change significantly or withdraw altogether" the bill.

"We are right in the thick of the challenges the NHS faces and while change is necessary, this major upheaval is not," he added.
