Govt's insurance decision receives criticism

Ylr-news-19583856

A decision made by the government to allow insurers to continue to legally discriminate against people on the basis of their age has been criticised by one organisation.

Age Concern and Help the Aged - which is to change its name to Age UK this spring - said that all mainstream cover providers should be made to serve consumers of all ages.

It made its comments after the Government Equalities Office recommended that insurers should be able to continue using upper age limits and to refuse quotes.

The organisation made its decision in response to a consultation on part of the Equality Bill.

Andrew Harrop, head of public policy at Age Concern and Help the Aged, stated: "It defies belief that in 2010 a business is still able to refuse to deal with someone because of the date on their birth certificate."

As well as being bad for older consumers, discriminating on the basis of age is also negative for business, he claimed.
