Govt 'should avoid overcomplicating paternity employment laws'

The government should avoid making new paternity employment laws too complicated.

This is according to Katja Hall, director of employment policy at the Confederation of British Industry, who suggested that doing so could have a detrimental impact.

Under plans announced by the Labour administration, new mothers will be able to transfer the second half of their year-long maternity leave to the father if the couple decide this is appropriate.

The alterations will come into effect next year, providing businesses with a chance to adapt in the meantime.

Ms Hall said: "We recognise the need for greater gender equality when it comes to childcare responsibilities, but the government must get these new rules right and not create a bureaucratic tangle."

The expert went on to say that the changes will provide working parents with more choice in terms of adapting their childcare arrangements in order to suit their own personal circumstances.
