Govt 'should trial 80 mph speed limit'

The government should now seriously consider piloting an increased speed limit of 80 mph on Britain's motorways.

That is the opinion of the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM), which believes that now is the time for a "properly controlled" and enforced change in the maximum speed drivers can travel at to be introduced.

Earlier in the year, the Conservative-Liberal Democrat alliance revealed it was considering the possibility of increasing the speed limit to 80 mph and the IAM has stated that this is the right way to go.

Initially, the body indicated the higher figure could be trialled on controlled and managed motorways where variable speed limit technology is used.

Simon Best, chief executive officer of the IAM, indicated that many drivers already drive regularly above 70 mph, meaning a higher limit "may not show huge increases in carbon or road casualties".

This comes after Martin Paling of Hastings Direct urged motorists to make sure they have effective insurance in place for the winter.  ADNFCR-2353-ID-800788396-ADNFCR
