Govt support for families "big step forward"
Posted by Emily Jones
Support announced by the government for families has been described as a "big step forward" by one organisation.
In a green paper due to be published by the Labour administration, the importance of family relationships will be emphasised.
Education minister Ed Balls stated he wants assistance for such relationships to be recognised in social policy.
Responding to the development, Jenny North, head of public policy for relationship counselling organisation Relate, said it is positive.
She claimed that the government is realising "for the first time" the importance of solid relationships.
Ms North added: "[It is] very reassuring and pleasing when we have been working towards this and to get to these measures for a long time."
Figures cited by Relate suggest that, whereas in 1957 only 4.8 per cent of births were outside marriage, this figure had increased significantly to 44 per cent three years ago.
