Harman abandons plans to alter church employment laws

Minister for women and equality Harriet Harman has revealed that the government has abandoned plans to change the law on equality as it affects religious organisations.
She said that following a defeat in the House of Lords, the legislation pertaining to employment in the church will remain as it is.
The politician, who is also the deputy leader of the Labour Party and the MP for Camberwell and Peckham, said that the administration had thought it would be beneficial to make clarifications on the topic.
This was what the proposed amendment to the Equality Bill was based on, she stated.
It had been hoped by those behind the proposed alterations that the ex¬emption for religious bodies from the existing legislation would be made clearer to ensure it applied only to church ministers.
Ms Harman added that the plans were rejected and, for this reason, the law will remain as it is.
