Heart surgery patients seeking compensation
Posted by Cheryl Bennett
A number of consumers are seeking compensation after discovering that the heart implant they received has been blamed for 13 deaths.
It is believed that the Sprint Fidelis defibrillator - used by nearly 7,000 patients in the UK - can cause fatal cardiac arrests through triggering electric shocks, the Daily Mail reports.
One of the five suing in Britain is Chris Pitt, who said he was left temporarily paralysed after receiving 35 such shocks of 750 volts each in one day.
Explaining how he blacked out when the device was activated on Christmas Day in 2007, Mr Pitt remarked: "It is only supposed to go off when one is unconscious so you are not supposed to feel anything. It really was terrifying."
A similar case was launched in the US, with £165 million paid out in compensation.
Meanwhile, two unnamed patients have been awarded millions in compensation after sustaining brain damage during heart surgery operations, the Bristol Evening Post recently reported.
