People planning to go on holiday to Jamaica have been issued a warning.

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office - which is the government department responsible for promoting British interests overseas - has declared a state of emergency in the country.

It did so in response to violent clashes that have been occurring between civilians and the army and police.

Responding to the situation, head of travel at Confused.com Steve Williams said people who ignore advice before embarking on a trip to a foreign country can risk problems in terms of receiving compensation in the event of a disaster.

He noted that individuals should check their level of insurance to see what situations they would be able to reclaim money in.

Mr Williams remarked: "Different policies are tailored to suit different types of traveller and as a result there is a large amount of variation amongst providers and what they are willing to cover."
