Holidaymakers injured in terrorist attacks to qualify for compensation
Under plans to be revealed this month, British tourists who are injured in terrorists attacks while they are on holiday will be able to qualify for compensation.
According to a report in the Mirror, justice secretary Jack Straw is to begin the process of bringing such rules into UK law.
The publication points out that, at present, people wounded or killed in such attacks are not eligible to receive payouts.
It adds that the new laws, which will mean victims of terror attacks abroad will be eligible for compensation of up to £500,000, will not be retrospective.
In other words, they will not apply to people who have already suffered injuries in this way, such as those affected by the Mumbai bombings last November.
Mr Straw assumed his current role as justice secretary in June 2007, having previously served as leader of the House of Commons, secretary of state for the foreign and commonwealth office and home secretary.
