HSE aims to reduce accidents involving cranes

Ylr-news-19486263

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has agreed on a set of recommendations for a statutorily-based register in order to improve the safety of tower cranes in the UK.

According to figures cited by the organisation, eight people, including one member of the public, have been killed by such devices over the last nine years.

Following a three-month consultation, the HSE has drafted proposals which have been sent to ministers for approval.

If they are agreed upon, they will come into force next April.

Among the measures put forward by the HSE was one which would require employers to notify the executive about projects involving tower cranes.

The information contained within the submissions would have to include a range of things, including the site address where the device is being used and a date of its thorough examination.

HSE figures suggest that a total of 53 employees involved in the construction industry died in 2008-09.
