Inheritances 'seen by many as alternative to savings'
Posted by Emily Jones
There are many people living in the UK who are relying on inheritances to fund their post-work years, it has been claimed.
According to Skandia, one-third of adults polled are waiting on money left in wills or on lottery winnings to provide sufficient finance for their retirement, rather than ensuring they are putting enough money aside themselves.
The firm, which is a savings solution provider and has operations in 20 countries across four continents, noted that the findings are "worrying".
Spokeswoman for the organisation Michelle Cracknell said that believing they are in line to receive money or property in the wills of others can make people more relaxed about planning for their futures.
However, she went on to note: "Things can always change and the inheritance may go down in value or even disappear altogether."
Skandia also found that six per cent of respondents were planning to marry someone rich who could fund their retirement.
