Insurance claims made for water damage 'up'
Posted by Emily Jones
The number of people making insurance claims for water damage has increased this winter, it has been claimed.
According to Sainsbury's Home Insurance, more than 16,000 such requests for payouts have been made by consumers whose properties have been affected by water escaping from burst pipes as a result of the freezing conditions.
The firm suggested that a total of over £35 million has been paid out by industry operators as a result of water claims.
Commenting on the issue, manager at the company Ben Tyte remarked: "There have certainly been more home insurance claims linked to water damage in recent weeks than we'd expect to see when the weather is milder."
He added that, while there was a rise in activity among cover providers last winter too, it was not as "prolonged and intense" as this year's.
Many areas of the UK saw freezing conditions and snow bring schools and businesses to a close over the festive season and into the new year.
