The cloud of volcanic ash that has been drifting over to the UK from Iceland has disrupted travel services and insurers will respond to it in different ways.

This is according to Confused.com, which noted that a so-called 'Act of God' such of this does not have a standard way to be treated by cover providers.

Head of travel insurance at the price comparison website Steve Williams said: "The situation is incredibly rare and insurance providers will treat the occurrence in different ways."

He added that people whose travel plans have been affected by the disruption should first contact their airline provider.

According to the expert, such organisations will offer alternative flights and dates for trips.

Mr Williams also noted that occasions such as this come under catastrophe cover in many insurance policies.

As a result of the cloud of dust, UK airspace was closed for the first time in its history over fears that aircraft engines may be damaged.
