The beginning of the year is the least popular time for couples to tie the knot, it has been suggested.

According to figures produced by specialist wedding insurer Ecclesiastical, January sees 1.7 per cent of all weddings which take place during the year.

Responding to the findings, personal lines manager at the firm Dave Simms said they cannot be explained entirely by the weather.

This is because December, which can be "equally chilly", is nearly three times more popular among couples getting hitched.

He added: "Post-Christmas gloom may be a factor; finance may be another. For many people, January can be one of the toughest months to budget for after the expense of Christmas and New Year."

January is often seen as one of the most depressing months among consumers, as their bills from the festive season come through. In addition, the inclement weather and long nights can cause people to feel down.
