Lancaster motorists avoid speeding fines
Posted by Chris Stevenson
Over half of the number of motorists issued speeding tickets in the Lancaster district last year have avoided paying the fees.
Data published by the Lancashire Partnership for Road Safety showed that 13 fixed speed cameras caught 1,135 drivers breaking the speed limit in 2010, the Lancaster Guardian reports.
However, just 494 people paid the statutory fine issued for offences across the region.
The greatest number of captures took place on Slyne Road in Lancaster, with 286 individuals caught out, while 146 others were pulled up for driving too fast on Regent Road in Morecambe.
However, the figures revealed 181 speeding tickets were cancelled, with a further 315 motorists avoiding payment by attending a speed awareness course.
The fines amounted to a total of £29,640 in revenue, with fixed penalty notices standing at £60 each.
A number of organisations work together to form the Lancashire Partnership for Road Safety and these include the Lancashire County Council, the Highways Agency and the Blackburn with Darwen Unitary Authority.
