Landlords 'critical over national register'

Ylr-news-19384060

Landlords remain critical over the national register of industry practitioners announced by the government.

To be run by an independent organisation, the register would be a prerequisite for people intending to let properties and landlords would have to submit the addresses of their property holdings each time they sign up.

New research from Paragon Mortgages found that 56 per cent of such property investors recently polled believed that the introduction of the register will deter landlords from making further investments.

In addition, 57 per cent said they thought it would force some people out of the sector due to the increased regulatory burden.

"Landlords are already subject to an estimated 50 Acts of Parliament and 70 sets of regulation, so they are naturally going to be sceptical about the introduction of another major regulatory initiative," stated Paragon managing director John Heron.

He added that, while is it positive that the government is trying to tackle rogue elements of the UK's private rented sector, it must ensure that any regulation is "fair and proportionate".
