Landlords planning ahead in terms of their portfolio would be well advised to invest in regional student accommodation.

That is if comments made by Marcus Roberts, director of student investment and development at Savills, are anything to go by, as he feels this area of the market represents a "good place" for professionals in the buy-to-let sector to get involved in.

Mr Roberts explained that many investors in the residential property arena are increasingly focusing their efforts on student properties based in "quality locations" that are desirable for scholars.

The expert advised landlords: "What you need to do is look at the strength of the university and the university city that you are investing into and more particularly, the location."

Earlier this week (May 16th), Knight Frank reported that student housing in such areas was the best performing UK property investment sector in 2010 with total returns of 14.65 per cent.
