Lib dems call for marriage for same-sex couples

Marital legislation pertaining to same-sex couples could well be opened up, with the Liberal Democrats calling for changes in the law.
Currently, no two people of the same gender can be married in the UK, while no two mixed-sex individuals can enter into civil partnerships, although this could be altered in the near future.
Earlier this year, Nick Clegg told Pink News that he supports gay marriage, stating: "Love is the same, straight or gay, so the civil institution should be the same too."
And now the Autumn Conference has called on the government to allow such unions between gay people and permit religious celebrants to celebrate these marriages legally in an authorised location.
Furthermore, those who wish to change gender are not permitted to remain in civil partnerships or marriages at the moment, but this may be altered as well.
Commenting on the matter, MP Stephen Gilbert remarked: "Current legislation degrades same-sex couples to a second-tier partnership and leads to unnecessary pain and trouble."
