Lifestyle breaks 'growing in popularity'

Ylr-news-800054032

Consumers are increasingly eager to embark on lifestyle breaks for the purposes of rest or to enjoy travel experiences, it has been claimed.

Santander Credit Cards has undertaken research which indicated there has been a 14-fold rise in the amount of people taking time out since the 1970s.

Specifically, 1.2 million Britons have chosen to commence a period away from a professional or educational environment since the start of the recession.

Among the reasons given for taking a break, 47 per cent cited travel as being the determining factor, while 20 per cent said they are eager to rest.

Furthermore, those planning this stage of their life typically estimate that it will cost about £5,100.

Ian Coles, a director at the organisation, said many people are being drawn to the idea of a career break "as the job market becomes increasingly competitive".

In fact, the Office for National Statistics' recent Labour Force Survey showed that the jobless rate totalled 2.46 million between April and June 2010.

Mr Coles added: "It's a great opportunity to travel and to learn but unfortunately it doesn't come cheap."
