Local authorities 'should use existing laws to tackle rogue landlords'

Ylr-news-19408935

Rather than introducing new regulations, local authorities should use the powers they already have to control rogue landlords.

This was the view expressed recently by David Salusbury, chairman of the National Landlords' Association (NLA), who said that there are now sufficient rules and regulations at the disposal of councils to ensure good practice among rental property owners.

He added: "The final piece in the jigsaw is encouraging local authorities to use existing and significant powers appropriately instead of introducing more regulation which only penalises good landlords."

Mr Salusbury made his comments at a joint reception at the Conservative party conference attended by the NLA and Crisis, a charity for single homeless people that was established in 1967.

Also speaking at the event was shadow housing minister Grant Shapps, who claimed he welcomed working with the NLA to address industry issues.
